My girls each needed quite a bit of phonics practice when they were early readers. In fact, two of my girls needed explicit phonics instruction and practice all the way through 4th grade.
I found that phonics lessons in the early years need to be short, plentiful, and most of all consistent.
I, however, encountered a problem with the ‘consistent’ portion of this rule – a couple of my children struggled terribly with writing stamina.
Many of the worksheets I found when my children were in the early reading stages all revolved around writing with a pencil. While learning to write well is certainly a skill to be mastered, I struggled with what to do if they were out of writing steam by the time we got to phonics.
As a result, I created many printable activities that utitlized cutting and pasting or sorting or matching in order to practice specific skills. There is more than one way to reinforce different concepts, thankfully!
This Long Vowel Sorting Activity was one of the many printable activities I created for my young ones. I have revised it with fresh fonts and graphics to use again with my 5 year old when he is ready.

Long Vowel Sorting Activity
This Long Vowel Sorting Activity is very easy to implement during your phonics lessons this week. I create simple and streamlined packets intentionally, as I need my homeschool life to be as streamlined as possible! It’s one of the many things I strive towards, in fact.
To use this activity, first print the Long Vowel Sorting Mat.
Then determine whether you are going to use the pictures with picture names, or just the pictures themselves. You do not need to print both pages; simply use the one that best fits your child’s needs.
After cutting out each picture, your child then glues the picture in the correct column.
All 5 long vowel sounds are included in this printable.
✔ If you need some ideas for teaching phonics and spelling to your children, take a look at How I Teach Spelling In Our Homeschool. You’ll find all of the resources I have used over the years.
If your child is a very early reader, ensure he knows the sound of each long vowel. Spend a few minutes looking around the room and finding objects that demonstrate the long vowels.
‘Table’ for long a sound, ‘coffee’ for long e sound, etc.
Give him some scissors and glue and off he goes!
If you want to use this activity several times over a few days or weeks, print it on cardstock and do not glue the pieces to the sorting mat.
