I’ve mentioned a couple of times on Facebook this week that my children and I study apples every single September.
Why?
Well, mostly because it is one of my favorite unit studies, if truth be told! 🙂
We love to have apple taste tests, we try to visit an orchard and pick a few apples, and we mostly love to read books about apples.
Because we read many of the same books each year, I thought I’d share them with all of you! We own several of these, and we borrow a few from the library as well.
I have found that with a topic that we turn to year after year, it’s best if we just add them to our library when our finances allow for that. Take one look at our bookshelves and you can see what topics interest us the most!
Favorite Books About Apples
We read these books each and every year, and they never grow old! Go reserve them at your library today and have a neat week (or month!) studying apples in your own homeschool.

Apples by Gail Gibbons
Gail Gibbons is one of my favorite authors for children’s non-fiction. Her books always have beautiful illustrations and just the right amount of text and information without being too much for my elementary kiddos. This book on apples discusses life cycle, varieties, and more.
How Do Apples Grow? by Betsy Maestro
Betsy Maestro is another author that never disappoints! Also, this particular book is part of the Let’s Read and Found Out Science series, of which I am a huge fan.
This is an excellent choice for studying the life cycle of an apple.
Apples for Everyone by Jill Esbaum
This book is part of another series to add to your reading list: Picture the Seasons series.
The photos in this book add so much to the text, which is written for the Preschool to First Grade crowd.
It offers a look at an apple’s life cycle, photos of different varieties, and offers several photos about harvesting in an orchard.
Apples by Jacqueline Farmer
This book also goes into the apple life cycle in detail a child can easily understand.
What I love about this book is how well it explains that most apple trees do not grow from seed, but from grafting. Interesting!
Apples, Apples Everywhere by Robin Koontz
What a spectacular book for learning about an apple harvest! It includes details on how apples are picked and stored, which is a neat addition.
It also includes a craft in the back of the book, if you’re feeling crafty with your kiddos.
The Apple Pie Tree by Zoe Hall
If you have preschoolers, this is a must read in your apple unit study!
Watch the apple tree change through the seasons, including baby robins nesting in the tree.
It also includes an apple pie recipe and activity at the end of the book.
Apple Tree Christmas by Trinka Hakes Noble
Yes, the setting of this book is at Christmas, but you must read it if you’re doing an apple unit study!
The family in the story loses their apple tree in an ice storm, and the gifts that result from that tree are a beautiful picture of a father’s love.
This is a book we turn to over and over again.
