My littlest girl is not quite 4 1/2 and she still has a few letters that she doesn’t yet recognize in the alphabet.
While we do All About Reading Pre-Reading 2-4 times each week, she still has several letters that she has not yet mastered.
You can take a peek at our current preschool schedule to see what else our preschool here at home contains.
Am I worried? Oh goodness, no. Not in the slightest.
Keep in mind that she ‘s my 4th child, which makes an enormous difference. If she had been my first, well, that would be a different story.
Experience is a good teacher. 🙂
So why can’t she recognize all of her letters yet? I can name several great reasons! She’s busy playing blocks, reading a ton of different books, playing outside, and just being a child.
While she’s had some interest in reading and letters and numbers, she has certainly preferred to use her imagination with her play animals or her Richard Scarry Busytown Playset (one of her favorites!).
Plus, she has just needed some extra time.

However, in the last few weeks, she seems to have developed a real interest in learning those last few letters. She wants to spell words like her big sister. She wants to read books by herself like her brother.
I’m thrilled! Let the learning beginning!
We just needed to wait until she was good and ready – and now she is!
ETA in 2024: If you find yourself in a similar situation with your child who needs a bit more time, consider All About Learning’s Uppercase Letter Crafts Book. There is also a Lowercase version.
You can read about how I used Uppercase Letter Crafts Book with my son and see some good pictures of how it works. It wasn’t available, sadly, at the writing of this original post.
ABC Puzzle Cards
My littlest girl has a love of puzzles – easy jigsaw puzzles, wooden puzzles, matching cards, you name it.
So making a set of ABC Puzzle Cards seemed like the perfect fit for her!
In this download, you’ll find 2 sets of ABC Puzzle Cards. The first set is in color and the second set is in black ink only.
If you like the style of the first set, you could certainly print them in gray-scale only and maintain that bubble-style print.
Ideas to Use ABC Puzzle Cards
There are many ways you could use these cards, however, here are a few ideas to get you started:
♥ Match uppercase to lowercase letters
♥ If using the colored cards, find all the letters of the same color
♥ Choose a letter and find an object with the same beginning sound
♥ Have your child find each letter in her name
♥ Choose 2-3 sets of upper and lowercase cards and play a memory-style game
♥ Lay several of the cards face up and play an I Spy game where your child chooses the cards
What ideas do you have to use these fun cards? Please share them in the comments!
