It’s April, Friends! This year is just flying right along. I have another set of monthly color by sight word worksheets for your young ones. Color by code worksheets are always a nice change of pace from a traditional worksheet.
Each month of this year, I am publishing a packet of Color By Sight Word worksheets. April has a few fun themes, such as Arbor Day, chicks, flowers, and sprouts!
Since sight words need much practice, this whole year will focus on those common words we see every day. I will be utilizing various grades from the Dolch Sight Word List.
✔️ Looking for more worksheets to use during April? Try the April Word Search Packet which has 10 different April themes – At the Pond, poetry (April is Poetry Month), spring flowers, the library, the farm, and more!

April Color By Sight Word Worksheets
April’s packet of color by sight word worksheets will focus on words found on the Second and Third Grade Dolch sight word lists.
If you’re not familiar, there are several lists of common, everyday words. The two most popular lists are the Dolch Sight Word List and Fry’s Word List.
I will use various levels of the Dolch Word List (Pre-Primer through 3rd Grade) throughout the year as we practice these sight words!

As with any worksheet, I advise going over the directions carefully with your child to make sure he understands the task. Because sight words are quite challenging for many children, take the time to go over each word on the page.
Here are a few ideas to get you started:
- If the sight word matches a particular spelling pattern, point out other words that also match that pattern.
For example: eight has the long a sound. Write the word eight on a piece of paper, and then write the words neigh, weigh, and weight.
You can also remind your child of the rhyme about I before E:
I before E except after C, or when sounded like a as in neighbor and weigh. - Point out any vowel teams in the sight words and review what a vowel team is.
- Review color words, as they are used on every page! Some of the color words are from the Dolch list, so those are certainly worth mentioning.
- Review beginning blends, especially those found in color words.
