My 5 1/2 year old is at the very beginning stages of learning to read. With my three older children, I had an early reader, an average reader, and a later reader.
Even though we are just starting the learning-to-read process, I have a feeling this is going to a slower journey with this fourth child of mine. Of course this is fine with me as her mother/teacher, because I want her to progress at her own pace.
There’s no reason to push her too far too fast, so we will work on her reading little by little each day.
This week, we’re working on Lesson 2 in All About Reading Level 1 (second edition). {affiliate link}
I also thought she would enjoy these CVC Short A clip cards!

Because my daughter isn’t ready for a ton of handwriting yet, these clip cards are perfect for her.
I deliberately only chose two words for her to read on each card. As I said, she is still a very beginning reader, so reading three words on each card x 4-5 cards would be too much for her.
I don’t want her to see reading as something laborious, just to be endured. 😉
Each day, she will work on reading 4-6 cards in this short a set.
To use these cards, simply print, laminate if desired, and find a handful of clothespins.
You can leave the 8.5 x 11″ page intact if you would like to keep the words grouped by word families.
If that doesn’t matter to you, cut the word cards apart.
After your child reads both words on the card, she places her clothespin on the word that best describes the picture.
If you don’t have clothespins on hand, feel free to use bear counters, skittles, or any other small object to mark the correct word.
This Short A set focuses on words that end in:
-at, -an, -ap, -ag, -am, -ab, -ag, and -ad
More Ideas for Using CVC Short A Clip Cards
If these clip cards are merely review for your young reader, here are a few more ideas to extend this activity:
— After choosing the correct word on each card, have your child tell you 3 more words that rhyme with the correct word.
— Give your child 4-6 cards to clip. After choosing the correct word, have your child write these words on the white board, using letter tiles, or on a piece of paper. (This is my favorite handwriting paper for early writers.)
— After choosing the correct word on the card, have your child use the word in a sentence.
What other ways can you think of to use these clip cards with your young reader?
Note that this set is for personal use only with your own children. This set is not for classroom or co-op use. There will be a full set of CVC Short Vowel Clip Cards for classroom use in the next few days, so stay tuned!

I’m so glad they can use them! I have the Short E set posted, but just haven’t gotten around to the others yet! I hope to have many clip cards in the coming year, because my kiddos love them too!
