In our homeschool, I don’t start a formal writing or composition curriculum until at least 4th or 5th grade. Aside from doing the composition exercises in Rod and Staff English, my main focus of those years is writing solid sentences and paragraphs.
Some of my children picked up writing very easily, and others have definitely struggled (and currently struggle!).
Writing solid sentences and paragraphs takes inordinate amounts of modeling and instruction. One of the many ways we work on this in our homeschool is with these writing booklets with picture dictionaries. While I don’t currently have a child in the Kindergarten through 3rd grade age range, my girls used plenty of these little booklets to perfect their sentences in previous years!

My youngest who is currently 4 will also practice with these when he is older. Right now, he’s busy outside whacking everything he can find with a bat. There will be plenty of academic time later!

Farm Writing Booklet with Picture Dictionary
If you’re like me and have several children, it becomes necessary to combine learning activities and ages and stages whenever possible. This is more easily done in the elementary years, I have found.
These booklets are a great way to combine a writing activity for young learners. Provide as much or as little writing support as needed for your little people.
If you’re working on a Farm Unit in your homeschool, you can read a couple of your chosen books throughout the week. Each day, your child can choose at least one picture from the dictionary, find the appropriate page in the writing booklet, and write 1-3 sentences about the picture.
If you use narration in your homeschool, this is a great way to practice that with mom as the scribe.
This writing activity is also perfect for practicing sentence construction, capitalization, punctuation, descriptive words, parts of speech, and much more!
I have also included a variety of ways to use these writing booklets in your home or classroom with an assortment of ages!
If you have advanced 2nd or 3rd graders that are ready to learn parts of speech, you can download this very gentle Parts of Speech recitation. It’s super easy to incorporate in your learning time each day!
