Franklin D. Roosevelt – Fascinating Facts
Franklin Delano Roosevelt became America’s 32nd President when he was elected in 1932. He assumed the Presidency of the United States in the depths of The Great Depression. Here are a few fascinating facts regarding President Roosevelt:
- Franklin D. Roosevelt was an only child from a very wealthy family. He lived a life of privilege, having private tutors and going to prestigious private schools. Despite his wealthy upbringing, he had a desire to help common people.
- F. D. Roosevelt married his fifth cousin, Miss Eleanor Roosevelt, who was also the niece of Theodore Roosevelt. Theodore Roosevelt walked Eleanor down the aisle at their wedding.
- While vacationing, Mr. Roosevelt contracted polio and lost the use of his lower limbs. He later instituted the March of Dimes which funded a vaccine for polio.
- President F. D. Roosevelt was the only US President to serve for four terms. Term limits for the presidency were not established until 1951.
- President Roosevelt died of a massive cerebral hemorrhage while serving his 4th term. He was succeeded by Harry S. Truman.
