Math Subtraction Flash Cards with Answers

A few days ago, I published a free set of Addition Flash Cards with Answers, so make sure you go download those if you haven’t already!

And of course there needed to be a set of Subtraction Flash Cards since addition and subtraction are inverse operations.

In my 14+ years of being a homeschool mom and studying my children, I have seen over and over again that children need to practice math facts in a variety of ways.

Flash cards, while quite traditional, are still an excellent way to drill math facts to mastery.

In our homeschool, mastery of math facts is certainly the goal. As you inch closer to 6th grade math and higher, percents, fractions, and decimals become very hard if math facts cannot be quickly recalled.

Subtraction Flash Cards with Answers

This set of subtraction flash cards contains equations for numbers 12 to 0.

If you print this packet using front-to-back mode on your printer, these become true math flash cards where you can turn the card over and see the correct answer.

I also created the file so you can easily print only the equations if you would prefer. Just choose the option that fits your teaching situation the best.

➡️ Note that these math flash cards are not intentionally not cutesy in any way, so they can be used with a variety of ages – even upper elementary and middle schoolers if they need the refresher.

Printing Help for Subtraction Flash Cards

This post uses affiliate links. Please see my disclosure policy for more information.

— Print flash cards on card stock (this is the brand I have used for years) for a better experience. They last longer and you can’t see the answer through card stock as you can plain copy paper.

— When setting your document to print, ensure you are printing from ‘front to back’ and ‘print on long edge’ is selected.

— Initially, only print one set of cards from front to back to ensure the settings are correct. When you are satisfied, print the rest of the document.

— I recommend that you laminate these flash cards if they are going to get heavy use.

Ideas to Use Subtraction Flash Cards

There are a multitude of ways to use flash cards to practice subtraction facts, but I have a listed several ways that we use these subtraction flash cards if you would like some fresh ideas!

— Pull out the cards that focus on only one fact family. Practice all of the 10-___, for example. Practice a new fact family each day to mastery.

— Draw a flash card from the stack and have your child write the answer on a small whiteboard.

— Practicing with a sibling? Have a Subtraction Flash Card Bee! The same rules apply as a Spelling Bee, just use these flash cards. The last one standing wins!

— Is the concept of subtraction still new? Draw a flash card and have your child build the equation with bear counters, mini erasers, beans, or whatever you have on hand.

— After determining the answer to the flash card, have your student state whether the difference is odd or even.
