As a mama of many little people, I find myself on the constant search for good books. While we are only slightly Charlotte Mason-styled in our homeschool, I value high-quality children’s literature. I certainly allow a small amount of reading “fluff” here and there, however I work hard to promote children’s books that have meaning. And those books that are just fun to read.
I’m starting a new series here at Mama’s Learning Corner: What We’re Reading. I’ll post a few of the books we will read this week and a 1-2 sentence summary of each. Some weeks will be themed, while others will be completely random. I’ll choose between 3-5 books to highlight.
Since my children are 6 and under, our books will fall anywhere from a Pre-K to a Second Grade reading level. There won’t ever be chapter books, but there will be lengthier children’s writings that we use as read-alouds.
I spend an hour or so each week just searching out great reads for my kiddos. Hopefully, this will help you find some new-to-you books as you plan your library trips for the week. And it will also hold me accountable in finding those excellent treasures for us to read and talk about as a family.
So what are our picks for this week? Since we are getting back in the school groove today, our choices are a little more random (as they are most weeks!).
Every Thing On It – Shel Siverstein
We are big fans of Shel Silverstein in our house, so I can’t wait for us to delve into Every Thing On It! My 6 1/2 year old thinks that his writing style is hysterical, so we’ll easily get through the whole book this week even though it is lengthy.
From Amazon:
Have you ever read a book with everything on it? Well, here it is, an amazing collection of never-before-published poems and drawings. You will say Hi-ho for the toilet troll, get tongue-tied with Stick-a-Tongue-Out-Sid, play a highly unusual horn, and experience the joys of growing down.
Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type– Doreen Cronin
Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type is authored by on of our other favorites: Duck for President. After I explain what a typewriter is, I’m sure my kiddos will love this.
From Amazon:
Farmer Brown has a problem. His cows like to type. All day long he hears
Click, clack, moo.
Click, clack, moo.
Click, clack, moo.
But Farmer Brown’s problems REALLY begin when his cows start leaving him notes…
Super-Completely and Totally the Messiest– Judith Viorst
This is the second week we’re borrowing Super-Completely and Totally the Messiest from the library. Judith Viorst writes in a style my children just adore. We literally read this book over 15 times last week and I have no doubt we’ll read it that many times this week too.
Just for the record, I have one Sophia and one Olivia.
From Amazon:
Olivia is very neat, and her brother Jake is “sort of, but not a HUGE slob,” but their little sister Sophie is another matter altogether. Sophie’s room is “seriously–I mean seriously–REVOLTING.” Olivia simply can’t get over Sophie’s untidiness in every single situation–school, Halloween, even the bathtub is no sanctuary from the messy hand of Sophie.
What are you and your kiddos reading this week? I’d love for you to share your book finds in the comments!
