Beginning and intermediate readers need a multitude of ways to practice phonics. Give your young ones a nice change of pace with this set of Short Vowel CVC Word Search worksheets!
My oldest and youngest daughters loved word searches when they were early readers. Even though they both took a bit longer to read fluently, they sure did enjoy using a pencil or highlighter to mark off words as they found them.
Even though those same sweet girls are now 15 and 11 1/2, they still love word searches! I updated this packet for my soon-to-be reader that is currently 5 years old. Hopefully he will enjoy word search puzzles as much as his sisters did!

Short Vowel CVC Word Searches
This set of Short Vowel CVC Word Searches contains 5 pages – one word search for each short vowel sound. Each page contains 20 CVC words that focus on that particular vowel.
I also included a small handwriting portion, where your child practice writing and spelling the name of the picture shown. If your student needs spelling help, all of the words are found in the word bank on the page.

Have a Phonics Review with Your Beginning Reader
This type of activity is an opportune time to review phonics with your child.
- Find other items around the room that have the same short vowel sound.
- Choose a few words from the worksheet and take turns finding words that rhyme.
- Read through the word bank list together and find all of the words with the same beginning letter.
- Review the 5 vowels and their short vowel sounds.
If you are looking for a spelling curriculum that teaches phonics in a logical, methodical way, take a look at my post on using Traditional Spelling in our homeschool. It starts at the very beginning with CVC words and basic sight words, teaching phonics rules all along the way. It was a great fit for my 4th child!
You can see all of the tried-and-true spelling curriculum and resources I have used in our homeschool throughout the years. This post is especially helpful if you need to know how to teach spelling to your child, or if you’re a new homeschooler just starting out.
And of course, we have always been big fans of All About Spelling. Here is a time-saving All About Spelling tip that I discovered after using it for a few years.

Wonderful worksheets and printables; however, in the “short vowel cvc word search pack” the short “o” word search is incorrect. There are no “o” words in the puzzle. It is identical to the short “i” puzzle. Please make correction to short “o”.
Thanks.
Thanks for bringing that to my attention! I uploaded the wrong draft. 😉
The final copy is uploaded and is correct.
Thanks again!
PERFECT timing! Thank you for all of your wonderful work!!!
Yay! Glad you can use them!
Thank you, these look wonderful! Are the answers found in all directions (including diagonal and backwards), or just horizontally and vertically?
Hi Shay! The words are only horizontally and vertically. I thought that would be easier for the younger readers. 🙂
