Even though none of my children have a beloved teddy bear, I have always enjoyed reading teddy bear books with them.
Right now, my youngest boy (4 1/2) and I are enjoying The Teddy Bears’ Picnic. This particular book has very interesting illustrations! We usually spend more time talking about the pictures than we do actually reading the story.
If you do a Book of the Week style learning, this is a fun read to tuck away for the doldrums that February often brings.
As usual, I have quite a few learning ideas listed below from which to choose if you’re looking to add a little something more.

The Teddy Bears’ Picnic
Book: The Teddy Bears’ Picnic
Author: Jimmy Kennedy
Illustrator: Alexandra Day
If you go down in the woods today
You’d better go in disguise
For every bear there ever was
Will gather there for certain because
Today’s the day the Teddy Bears have their picnic.
The Teddy Bears’ Picnic was originally written as a song by Jimmy Kennedy. I had a little Fisher-Price dial knob music box that played this tune when I was a little girl. ❤
While there are a few picture book versions of this song available, I chose this one for its fascinating illustrations. They are so well done!
The illustrations stretch out on a 2-page spread, and they offer much over which to pore and ponder.
Learning Activities for The Teddy Bears’ Picnic
If you would like to add some learning activities to this book, here are a few ideas from which to choose:
→ Download this Teddy Bear Worksheet packet. This is just right for Preschool or Kindergarten students.
→ Make a very easy bear snack. These are really cute!
→ Learn a few teddy bear songs.
→ Take your teddy bears on a picnic. Pack sandwiches and drinks and head outside for your own picnic! A change of pace is always nice!
→ We’re making teddy bear cookies! Take a look at the big bear cookie cutter that we have which works so well. And this is my favorite rolled cookie dough because it doesn’t need to be chilled in the fridge. You just mix it and roll out the cookies. I’ve used this for years with much success!
